Cease-fire or fight on? Israel weighs next step in Gaza
Diplomatic-Security Cabinet to meet to decide future of Operation Protective Edge
Political echelon must decide whether campaign will be brought to an end or expanded • IDF hits 80 targets in Gaza. Israel's Diplomatic-Security Cabinet was set to meet on Wednesday to decide whether to continue Operation Protective Edge. Overnight Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces struck around 80 terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip. Intense tank shelling was reported in some areas of Gaza, including the Jabaliya neighborhood. On Tuesday night, Israeli officials said there was no cease-fire agreement and that the IDF's mission remained the same -- to uncover and destroy the terror tunnels Hamas has built from underneath Gaza across the border into Israel.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri on Tuesday denied a statement by the PLO Secretary-General Yasser Abed Rabbo that Hamas had accepted a 24-hour cease-fire.
Abu Zuhir said there would be no cease-fire until Israeli forces pulled out of Gaza and the blockade of the coastal enclave was lifted. Mohammed Deif, commander of Hamas' military wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades. "The Zionist military is defeated. It understands that the balance of power has changed," Deif said, according to an Israel Radio report. Deif warned that "our soldiers yearn for death the way the Zionist soldiers yearn for life."

With Israel at War, U.S. Lawmakers Give Full Support
U.S. lawmakers are pressing the Obama administration to take no action that puts pressure on Israel to halt its military operations. "At times like this, people try to isolate Israel," House Speaker John Boehner said Monday. "We are here to stand with Israel, not just as a broker or observer but as a strong partner and a trusted ally. What does that mean? Well, it doesn't mean issuing vague, on-the-one-hand, on-the-other-hand statements. No, it means backing up our words and showing solidarity with our friend." (AP) Ted Cruz, Kirsten Gillibrand Team Up on Hamas - Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) united on Monday to push a resolution condemning Hamas in its war against Israel. The resolution strongly criticizes Hamas for using "innocent civilians as human shields," tags Hamas and other terrorist groups with the blame for thousands of rocket attacks on Israel launched from Gaza, and demands that PLO chairman Mahmoud Abbas condemn Hamas' tactics. Gillibrand called on the global community to "stand up" to Hamas. Cruz said the U.S. and the entire international community "must expose and denounce Hamas' barbaric tactics and unequivocally support Israel's right to self-defense." The resolution is a companion to a House resolution introduced by Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.)
